iPhone users should rejoice! You might no longer need to wear any protection when you want to touch your iPhone if you've been using asbestos gloves since it's been so hot. That's because Apple has, as was predicted, released iOS 17.0.3 to fix the flaws that caused iPhone units to overheat while the battery was draining. Although other devices running iOS 17 were also warming up, the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone Pro Max received the majority of complaints.

Even while Apple attributed the issues to a software error, opening some apps, including as the social media site Instagram and the ride-sharing service Uber, seemed to ignite the problems. the temperature increase that had an impact on several Apple smartphones. Uber and Instagram both released upgrades, and Asphalt 9's developers are allegedly working on a patch. However, Apple did act swiftly in response to complaints about overheating iPhones, claiming over the weekend that the issue was a flaw in iOS 17, and they pledged to deliver a fix.

For individuals whose iPhones are getting too hot, the update should extend their battery life. Users who complained about their hot phones claimed that the battery was depleting at a pace of 1% every minute. On an overheated iPhone, for instance, 10 minutes of Instagram surfing would result in a 10% reduction in battery life.

iOS 17.0.3 is currently available for download For iPhone XS and later models, iPad Pro 12.9-inch and later models, iPad Pro 10.5-inch and later models, iPad Pro 11-inch and later models, iPad Air 3rd generation and later models, iPad 6th generation and later models, and iPad mini 5th generation and later models are all compatible with iPadOS 17.0.3. The update card from Apple states, "This update provides important bug fixes, and addresses an issue that may cause iPhone to run warmer than expected."

In addition to lowering the temperature on impacted iPhone models, iOS 17.0.3 also fixes two security flaws, one of which is in the Kernel, the portion of an operating system that controls everything. The cybersecurity vulnerability CVE-2023-42824, which is categorized by the Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures numbers, might allow local attackers to gain access to data they shouldn't be able to and escalate their privileges. Apple claims to be aware of reports that this vulnerability was used against iOS versions prior to iOS 16.6. The vulnerability was closed by implementing better checks.

WebRTC is an open-source initiative that developers utilize to enable real-time video, voice, and text communication between web browsers and mobile devices. The second vulnerability addressed by the update relates to WebRTC. A buffer overflow from CVE-2023-5217 might result in the execution of arbitrary code. The latter could provide an attacker access to the system, allow them to run arbitrary code, and let them steal confidential and private information.

Even if your iPhone isn't getting too hot to handle and warming up may be in your best interest to install the update for security purposes. Follow the prompts by going to Settings > General > Software Updates.
