The Fairphone 5 is built with interchangeable parts for "increased repairability" and uses materials that are 70% recycled or from "fair-mined sources".

The Fairphone 5 is a gender-neutral smartphone created by the Scandinavian innovation firm Above in partnership with the Dutch smartphone maker Fairphone. It features "de-technified and refined details."

When developing the Fairphone 4 two years ago, Fairphone first contacted Above, and the two businesses have been working together ever since. According to Above Senior Creative Director Ryan Helps, Fairphone and Above's most recent project aimed to "merge and balance many valuable stories into one simple, iconic product," including durability, repairability, and modularity as well as sustainability and fair materials, all while meeting the "high industry expectations of smartphone products."

lowering "design"In order to reduce "the number of attachment points and screws that hold the modules in place" and "the barriers for the user when changing modules," Above focused on eliminating "clutter," according to Helps. He describes how the team "de-technified and refined mechanical details" in an effort to lessen "the fear factor and intimidation some may face when interacting with their phone's critical components".

Even though the Fairphone 5 has a larger screen, Helps claims that its slim profile makes it lighter than its predecessors and that its "softer corners" make for "a more ergonomic grip". The "iconic triangle camera" on the new phone helps "tell the modular story," he continues, while it has a "more gender-neutral expression."

Another crucial aspect is Helps claims that its "increased repairability" was finished with 10 spare components, including individual modules for the wide and ultra-wide cameras, the SIM card slot, and the SD card slot. By "expanding the scope of DIY repair compared to Fairphone's earlier models," "creating more space," and "streamlining the device," these extra spare parts are intended to improve modularity, according to Helps.

He claims that the gadget can first be opened by hand, without the need of a tool, and that all that is needed to access the modules that are "snapped together" within is a little screwdriver. The same five-year warranty that was first established with the Fairphone 4 continues to cover the Fairphone 5.

The Fairphone 5's material innovation includes using recycled materials from suppliers who have been thoroughly inspected, such as aluminum.Tin, rare earth elements, nickel, zinc, copper, magnesium, indium, and polymers are in opposition to the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI). According to Helps, the translucent, 100 percent recyclable rear cover was chosen to highlight "the innovation and sustainable thinking inside the product."

He adds that Fairphone is "the first company to use and implement mineral credits with organizations like the Alliance for Responsible Mining (ARM) and The Impact Facility (TIF) with support from the Fair Cobalt Alliance (FCA)," according to him. As a result, according to Helps, more than 70% of the 14 focus materials used in the device are either recycled or from "fair-mined sources" or promote ethical production through special impact programs with Fairphone and partners.

Continuing its collaboration with Fairphone, Above intends to develop "more sustainable products and For a better future, we need experiences—both real and digital," says Helps.
